TMPGEnc crashes

Todd

I am using the TMPGEnc mpeg encoder that is suggested on
papajohn.org, and the resulting quality is great.
However, when I try to encode from any AVI file larger
than 100MBytes, the encoder crashes right when the
progress bar hits 50%. It does work fine for clips around
50MB. Interestingly enough, for larger files it always
crashes at 50%, whether the AVI file was 150MB or 850MB.
Does this sound like a memory issue on the computer (I
only have 256MB) or some other configuration problem?

Thanks, Todd.

By the way, Papajohn, your suggestions to me yesterday
were right on. The video capture was working perfectly,
as a transfer back to the DV cassette illustrated. My
earlier woes were from inferior MPEG encryption software.

Todd,

Encoding is CPU intensive, not memory intensive. Sounds more like a hard
drive constraint, like using a FAT or FAT32 drive for temporary file storage
or final file location, and reaching some limit.

Glad it's working out for you,

PapaJohn

Does it make sense that the limit would be reached at
exactly the half-way point for two files of such different
sizes as 150MB and 850MB? What suggestions might you have
for resolving the issue? Would it require the addition of
another hard drive with a different file system type, or
could I make some modifications to my current setup?

What are you now using? You can easily change from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS...
if that's your constraint.

See the Problem Solving... Checklist --- Limitations section to see how to
check your system and do the change.
