TMP (xxxx.tmp) files

There are many TMP (xxxx.tmp) files and I need to delete the

files before today. The problem: when I go to delete them I cannot: I

get this message: "Cannot delete file. Cannot read from source file or

disk". How can I delete those files?

They are being used.
Boot into Safe Mode and clean out the %tmp% and %windir%\temp folders.

You followed the directions and are now responding based upon the results of said action.
 
Booting into Safe Mode is right.

Use XP's Search Facility and in the "All Files & Folders" bit, type
this in the search command box:

*.tmp,*.chk,~*.*

Make sure in the Advanced options you set searching to look in System
Files/Folders.
