.TMP Files won't Defragment

Hi - I'm back - I took everybody's advice - many thanks to bumtracks - I
finally got the Power Defragmenter program downloaded, but it didn't defrag
the 2 files I was asking about before: (2 Fragments-434 MB-named
\WINDOWS\Temp\DWMI8B8K.TMP ). I also ran ( cmd /C
del%windir%\Temp\DWMI8B8K.TMP ) and then ran the Windows Defragmenter again,
but the files still show up as files that cannot be defragmented. Got
anymore suggestions? Thanks - Jackie Oh, look for another question from
me with the subject "Spacing Errors"

Reboot. Then see if you still have those temp files. If you still do, try
to delete them in Safe Mode.

Delete all temporary files and clean out Temporary Internet Files folder
before defragging.

You do not need temporary files anyway, that's why they call them temporary.

temporary: lasting for a limited time.

Hi Wesley
I have rebooted several times, no good. I don't know how to delete them in
safe mode - care to give step-by-step instructions??? All temp files and
Internet temp folders were deleted before defragging (I know I don't need
them - hence the try at deleting them). When I do a search for that file it
comes back saying it can't be found.

Read other reply first: I forgot to say that when I look in temp files and
internet temp folder I can't find that file. Why then does it show up after
I defragment as a tmp file that cannot be defragmented??

Hi Wesley - I started my computer in Safe Mode (still there) and tried the
search for hidden or system files using the advanced search. I typed in the
file name - got nothing. So I did the advanced search for anything with .TMP
in the name. When the search was completed I ended up with a list of 137
files, but none named \WINDOWS\Temp\DWMI8B8K.TMP. Most of them open with
notepad, some won't open at all, but are all of these files temporary files
and is it safe to delete them? I don't know how to name each one without
listing all 137 in this post, which would mean I an awful long post - and you
might not be able to tell what they are anyway. Is there a way to reach you

Hi Jackie,

Nobody needs to see the files or the names of the files.

If they end in .TMP they are OK to delete.

TMP means temporary.

You can't hurt anything deleting tmp files, unless you just installed some
new program.

Most well mannered programs will delete tmp files when you reboot.

Yes, you can delete files in TEMP folders.

If you are unsure, reboot and check the folder(s) again.

XP will not let you delete a file that is in use. And will let you know
about it with a popup message.

If you try to select and delete all the tmp files in a folder and if any of
them are in use, you'll get an error message. Try to delete a few at a time
to avoid getting the error message. But, try to delete them all first.

If you're using ZoneAlarm, ZA has at least one tmp file that is almost
always in use.

Also if you just installed software you should reboot. Then check the
folder(s) again. Some programs require these files after a reboot. It is
good practice to always reboot after installing any software.

Hi Wesley - I deleted every file in the advanced search that actually ended
in .tmp. But there are still 121 files that the search produced. I don't
klnow if they are temp files or not. Here are some of their names:
drwtsn32 Q323255 KB826942 EraserLog These are all TXT
Documents that I can open (in Notepad) then there is: bootstrap (a JScript
Script File), filelist (a XML Document), setup (a INX File - modified
7-19-2002), VIRSCAN (Setup Information from 4-11-05), etc. Is it safe to
delete these files, too? Even if they don't actually have the .tmp
extension? After deleting the temp files, I defragmented again - just to see
if I may have gotten rid of the original file (\WINDOWS\Temp\DWMI8B8K.TMP)
that couln't be defragmented - no luck - it's still there. And I have
noticed that my computer is running REAL SLOW today. Takes forever to go
from desktop to actual post window. So, can I delete these other files, or
not. I want to be very clear that I have not found them in a TEMP folder -
they are in the list that I searched for any file with .TMP in the name, yet,
I don't see the .tmp in any of the file names left. I am getting ready to
throw this thing out the window - I hope you have some good news for me.

First thing you need to do is this:

Start | Run | Type or paste: control folders | Click OK |
View tab | UNCheck Hide extensions for known file types |
Apply | OK

drwtsn32 could be drwtsn32.exe or drwtsn32.log. Leave 'em alone.

Leave Q323255 and KB826942 alone, they are related to Windows Updates.

I have no idea what EraserLog is.

To Search for tmp files, type *.tmp in the Search for files or folders named
window.

You probably have scumware. Go here and do a little reading.

Wesley - You are an ANGEL - I am soooooo glad you are on this forum - it may
have taken a few days, but now my computer is free of that pesky file that
wouldn't defrag. I did everything you told me to do, and I now have 38% free
space on my hard drive instead of 23%. I only have one problem left - and I
THINK I know what is causing it. I bought the Norton AntiVirus 2005 and
installed it - ever since it has taken eons to "boot-up" (sometimes 4 1/2
minutes from turn on to "ready to use") . This program has Internet Security
and Password Manager in addition to the Anti Virus. Slow start-ups started
after installation. Could this be the reason, and is there anything I can do
to speed up startup? I have already went in to msconfig and unchecked a
bunch of programs that don't need to be activated upon startup. Thanks for
all your help - I hope you do this kind of work for a living - you could make
a fortune at it!! Jackie
