Title positioning

Are there any tricks to moving a title to the top of the screen (either in
single line or two-line mode)? Currently, I have something like this:

--------------
director
so-and-so



..
---------------

Notice the carriage returns and the period at the end. This moves the title
up, but it also leaves a period sitting in the middle of the screen.
Boohoo.

I've tried spaces, tabs, nb spaces, etc.
