Greetings from Downunder
I have several hundred pics to either scan or insert into a presentation,
nearly all of which will need a caption. I would like to create a master of
some sort that will display a text placeholder, always ON TOP of the pic,
and always in the same position on the slide, but moveable if necessary. It
would help if this text placeholder were pre-formatted with the font, size
and colour so that I can type straight in.
All help always appreciated

What Chirag, said but also....

If it was you I would not "scan" directly from powerpoint. But instead use your software that came with your scanner.

With regards to What settings to scan at....see
http://www.powerpointbackgrounds.com/powerpointgraphics.htm

It's all about pixels and not dpi with powerpoint

In addition to Chirag's suggestion, you might want to try the PPT Merge demo at
http://merge.pptools.com

It'd let you set up a single template presentation, then put the captions and
the names of the picture file into an Excel sheet, then merge the two to
produce slides with pictures imported and captions inserted and formatted.
