Timer

I've recently been doing some transcription and wondered if there is a timer
or any kind in word that lets you know how long you have been typing a
document? I sometimes forget to write it down. Thank you for your help

Sort of. In File | Properties | Statistics, there is a number for "Total
editing time." This basically reflects the entire time you have had the
document open since its creation. Provided you open a document only to work
on it and close it when you turn to another task, it will be relatively
accurate. I find it indispensable when, as happens all too frequently, I
start work on a new document and forget to start my timer. I can check the
editing time (which will usually be only a few minutes), add that amount
into my timer before starting it, and then proceed from there. It becomes
less useful in subsequent editing sessions since the time is cumulative.

FWIW, I have several small kitchen timers that, among other features, have a
Count Up setting. I use these to time my work (one for each running job). If
you can find one, it's preferable to find one that allows you to punch in
additional minutes when the timer is not running (for situations such as I
describe); some timers, when you do this, will insist on counting down
instead.

The ones I have have an easel/clip back with a magnet on it (intended for
refrigerators, I suppose), and if you have any metal near your desk, you can
stick one up there; I had to tack a metal plate up on the wall for those and
other magnetic items. FWIW, the ones I have (and I'm glad to see they're
still available, as I could use some more) are the one at

(though I feel sure I didn't pay that much for mine), but there are many,
many similar models on the market. In fact, this one is made in China and
obviously marketed by numerous importers, since the model at

is identical.

Thank you so much for the information. I actually did use the properites
option yesterday and it did help some. I will take a look at the other
timers. The one I currently have in my kitchen only does one thing.

Thank you again.

Just a postscript: If you are interested in the described digital timer,
note that, while it can time four separate jobs in the Count Down mode, it
is capable of only one in Count Up (stopwatch) mode, which is why you might
need more than one.
