Time for Excel to load

I have a user running Excel 2000 on Windows 2000. Until last week, whe
he rebooted his machine one day, his Excel documents were fine. Eve
since the reboot, however, his load time for any spreadsheet is upward
of twelve seconds minimum (with nothing else running; if there'
something else in memory, it can take 18 seconds). Notice m
description of the system monitor (ctl-alt-del, click "processes" tab)
when I had a quiet computer (no other programs running) and saw this:

0 sec (doubleclick an XLS icon) - Performance indicates Excel (dot) ex
running at 5% CPU capacity; it goes away just as quickly, and Syste
Idle takes over.

1 sec - System Idle at 99%
2 sec - System Idle at 99%
3 sec - System Idle at 99%
4 sec - System Idle at 99%
5 sec - System Idle at 99%
6 sec - System Idle at 99%
7 sec - System Idle at 99%
8 sec - System Idle at 99%
9 sec - System Idle at 99%
10 sec - Explorer (dot) exe spikes at 20%, briefly swaps with Excel fo
second billing (remember, System Idle stays on top the whole time)
then back to normal.

At this point, my four-ROW spreadsheet is open.

Word 2000 is totally unaffected; the machine browses websites with n
issues, email works, and no spyware runnin

Shot in the dark, but we have seen numerous memory issues in here revolving
around Excel 2000, and probably 99% of the time it all comes down to a corrupt
toolbar customisation file. What happnes if you log on as another user on that
machine, ie try a guest account and then try opening the same files - If they
open fine then this would lend credence to the above notion, in which case, hunt
down a file called *.xlb and reename it to *.old then relaunch Excel. It will
create another one for you, BUT, this is the toolbar customisation file and
obviously any previous changes to the toolbars will now disappear. If that
wasn't it then you can always hunt down the new one, delete it and rename the
old one back.

Hi gfinch

If that doesn't work and in any event:

** Windows 95/98/ME

Too much accumulated junk in:

C:\Windows\Temp File

** Windows NT/2000/XP

Too much accumulated junk in:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp directory

Close Windows and re-open to ensure that any partly installed programs
have finished with the contents of the temp file. To find your Temp
file pretty quickly with either Operating System:

Start->Run

Type the following

%Temp%

Press OK

OR:

In Explorer for Windows 95/98 or ME

Find and Select C:\Windows\Temp File

In Windows NT/2000/XP

Find and Select C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp

Select all files and delete.

If you feel that’s extreme, just copy them to a new location before
deleting but remember that you can delete them later.

Try Excel again.
