Time for a new mouse, MS vs Logitech, which should it be?

I used to have an Intellimouse and loved it, but ran into a driver
conflict situation and had to buy a Logitech (I don't even remember what
the conflict was). I've stuck with Logitechs and I'm due for a new mouse.
(The conflict was on a previous PC and shouldn't be a problem anymore)

I've read good and bad comments about the new Logitechs, I haven't seen
much about the Intellimouse.

must haves:
optical
comfortable/ergonomic
wheel/4+ buttons

like to haves:
cordless
high resolution
pizzazz (bells & whistles)

I web surf, photoshop, some design and some gaming (FPS).

Any recommendations? I'm concerned the cordless mice might be a PITA, what
if the battery goes dead while I'm using it? I tend to keep a mouse
through several systems so I don't mind paying for a nice one, but I'd
like to keep it under $60.

I currently have a Logitech Mouseman Optical that I like less and less
over the years. It just doesn't feel confortable anymore. The pads are
wearing out and it's going batshit crazy, occasionally skittering around
the desktop on it's own, it wanders when I try to do anything precise.
Heck, it's sometimes a chore just to highlight text.

I generally use the basic MS optical and bought two logitech opticals
- the basic corded kind , cause they were free after rebate.
I buy them just to have backups whenever theres a cheap sale. I
definitely prefer the MS corded over the logitech BASIC model.
Logitech has a lot of models so Im not talking about anything besides
the cheapest one. The MS just feels better to me. Its slightly bigger
, the Logitech is too small and flatter which just feels uncomfortable
to me.

The cordless? All I can say is the same in the other post - I really
like the MS , never used the Logitech. One big factor is the MS has
been on sale at a lot of places the last two months. The MS comes in a
zillion varaiations which are all the same except for the cosmetics -
the "Groovy" one with bright colors, a clear dark one, a blue one etc.
I got the black one with a leatherette middle section for $10 at
Office Depot in a recent deal that someone claimed was a ruse to
blacklist people by OD for improper coupon use. Have no idea if its
true but Im pissed at OD and they seem to be cracking down on online
coupon use.

Anyway someone just posted that the blue version was on clearance at
various Office Maxes so you might get that cheap. If cost is not a
factor Logitech seems to have a lot of models so you might find a
better model there. Ive seen some HUGE ones that look really ergo
shaped. The MS claims they have much better battery usage so they last
longer then the usual wireless. I was skeptical at first cause a
neighbor bought one a year ago and hated it , had a lot of problems
with the wireless keyboard and mouse. This one though works great so
far. If you find one of the deals on the MS mouse at 10-15 or even 20
bucks - thats about as much or slightly more than a plain corded
optical mouse so its not exactly a big outlay of funds. Id be way more
picky if you had to spend $40-50. It would have to get me a newspaper
and drinks and play music for that much.

I didnt like the intellimouse. Too big. Been using logitech mx800 and
mostly liked it, except that after awhile the batteries would run down too
quickly. I ended up getting a second set of rechargable batteries and a
recharger. Now I have a logitech mx1000. It is supposed to have better
batteries that last longer and so far it seems so. I hope so, because I
dont see where to open it up if I want to swap them out.

You probably could've just installed the Logitech driver and
used it with the MS mouse, but you didn't hear that from me.
Could be a problem with many extras buttons though.

If it's the old one, Logitechs have gotten better since
then. The next-to-cheapest version is now 800 dpi, and the
MX entry level is even better. However if you don't like
the feel you really ought to go to a local store and try
them in your hand. The logitech that would fit your
description is the MX700, if you don't like the feel of it
then there's nothing more to consider. Many find it very
accurate and responsive, though I still prefer an
ambidexterous, corded, MX300. With the weight removed it's
like a feather and being left-handed ambidexterous was
important to me, but due to a right-handed world I"m
ususally using my right hand and still don't find ergonomic
mice all that ergonomic. Maybe I've just been using a
mouse too long but even if it's supposedly better on the
wrist, it doesn't seem as good in actual use to me... YMMV.

I have the Logitech MX1000 here and love it.

Great cordless mouse, even though a bit pricey. It has solved all the
previous problems with cordless mice such as lags, jerky pointers, low
battery life, etc. And, it tracks like silk, better than any corded,
cordless, ball or optical mouse that I've ever used.

The best mouse that I've ever owned, recommended without reservations.

I bought a Logitech 510mx to replace a MS Intellimouse 3.0. The MS mouse went
belly up after about a year. The MS began to lose power intermittently(both USB
and PS2 conections) and it was very erratic when it did work.
So far, the 510mx is a much better mouse, especially for me. I lost the use of
my right arm and with eight programmable buttons I find it much easier to play
most PC games.
I haven't tried the wireless versions but from what I'v heard they are pretty
good,though a bit too heavy.
