I'm afraid it's been nearly 15 years since I had an Intel ... I find AMD do the job just as well, if not better.

I would never buy off eBay. ;)

Thanks for the replies - will stick to AMD. Just one more query before I order. Have seen XP home +sp2 for 176GBP down to 64. Is the latter likely to be genuine and legal? Need xp poker software but Linux is fine for everything else

Thanks for the replies,
My daughter's laptop must have the OEM version of XP - no installation cd. How would that work with a new build?

your daughters laptop i asuume you bought pre built ? and most companies dont supply an install/restore discs with their systems to save money

if you buy an OEM copy you will get just a disc and a serial instead of getting a box and all the manuals and crap you'd get with a retail version

OEM & Retail are the same Windows XP, no fancy packaging for OEM.

Pre-installs are legal, but don't half cause a few problems by not suppling a "real" Windows CD ... they should be shot, every last 'effing one of them. ;)

The 'proper' price for XP home is around £60 ... :)

Hello All,
Thanks for the replies. My daughter's laptop was pre-installed with XP with a rescue disk. OEM version sounds ideal for me.
My wife has started to use the laptop (never touched a computer before) so I have to get something faster than this old K6.
Intend to order Asrock K8NF4-SATA2 MB, Sempron 3400 CPU, 500W PSU. 1GB PC 3200 RAM, all from EBUYER. Still confused about RAM specs - ECC, buffered? What do I need with this set-up? EBUYER has cheapest 1Gb at £46.02.

Hello All,
Can find PC3200 DDR 1Gb RAM unbuffered, but not unbuffered and non error checking. Some do not state EC or non EC. Does this matter?
Thanks,

Nope, it don't matter ... a tip here, if you need to checkout what RAM is best for a MB, then go to Crucial's Memory Advisor ... http://www.crucial.com/uk/

Can save a lot of headaches buying from them too. ;)

Hello Guys,
Have ordered Asrock K8NF4G- SATA2 MB, Sempron 3400, Crucial 1GB DDR PC3200 RAM, 500W ATX PSU and OEM XP from Ebuyer for £243 inc delivery. All items were cheaper than same items on eBay.
