Hello All,
Want to do a build to run Suse 10, no fancy graphics or sound needed. Not going to use a case and have nearly new 40 GB HDD, 17" monitor and pci graphics and sound cards from current machine..
Problem is I know very little about MBs and processors but have looked at mixed reviews of suppliers such as ebuyer and overclock and need to start research somewhere..
Seen 350W PSU at 20 (bugger, keyboard is US in Suse), bundled Asrock k8-8F3, socket 754 MB with AMD 64-bit 2800+Celeron CPU, heatsink and fan, 512 Mb DDR 400 RAM for 130 GBP.
If this spec is not good enough I would be very grateful for any better ideas.
Thanks in anticipation,

You can always get a better spec but for the money I can't see to much wrong with that to run Suse 10.
I would say that was enough for your needs

Both ebuyer and overclockers have good reputations arounds these parts.

Suse 10 requirements:
SUSE Linux 10.0

Hardware Requirements

SUSE Linux supports most PC hardware components. The following requirements should be met to ensure smooth operation of SUSE Linux 10.0:

  • Processor: Intel: Pentium 1-4 or Xeon; AMD: Duron, Athlon, Athlon XP, Athlon MP, Athlon 64, Sempron or Opteron
  • Main memory: At least 256 MB; 512 MB recommended
  • Hard disk: At least 500 MB for minimal system; 2.5 GB recommended for standard system
  • Sound and graphics cards: Supports most modern sound and graphics cards

Hello,
Can anyone please tell me the speed of Sempron processors such as 2800 and 3000? Maplin are doing returned and tested bundles for approx 100GBP. Sound ideal for a tight build!
Thanks,

They are fine CPUs, just re-badged T'Breds & T'Birds though with a smaller onboard cache ... 754 "all in one" bundles are ideal for Linux. Get as much ram as you can. :thumb:

US Keyboard layout can be changed, just as you can with any OS. ;)

the 2800 runs at 1.6Ghz and the 3000 at 1.8Ghz, i'd get the 2800 as it has more cache than the 3000

ugh!

NO!

A Sempron is a cut-down chip, in it has less cache, from AMD ... but a Celeron is an abomination from Intel, don't expect it to be very quick, however, if money is that tight, beggars can't be choosers.

I got a MB, AMD Sempron & memory for £130 ... from http://www.3bsystems.co.uk/ :thumb:

peahouse, you is going downhill fast there ... you cannot give me a PChips MB, nor ECS ... crap. :p

What was wrong with the first one ... "bundled Asrock k8-8F3, socket 754 MB with AMD 64-bit 2800+ Sempron CPU, heatsink and fan, 512 Mb DDR 400 RAM for 130 GBP" ... that was a good price.

going down in price is just getting junk, there may be a "good deal" out there but not with PCChips or Celerons. :thumb:

Hi Muckshifter,
I was nervous about the PC chips bit! Definitely the 2800 Sempron - just got to check which MB has onboard graphics - all the offers are around £130.
Thanks,

Hello All,
Really interesting stuff in stuartw101's thread 'Building a new pc'.
Want a MB with sound, LAN and graphics onboard.
Is ASUS better than Asrock?
Is it better to go Sempron 2800, 3100, or 3400 or Ram 256Mb, 512Mb or 1Gb?
Must admit, the thrill of the chase is as good as the anticipation of the build!
Cheers,
peahouse05;)

Yes, Asus will be a better built board.

The bigger the better. a 2800 & 1gig can be just as good as a 3400 on 256 ... but a 3400 & 1gig is what to aim at. ;)

Thanks Muckshifter,
Asrock k8NF4G, Sempron 3400, 1Gb PC 3200 and 300W PSU come to approx £200 inc delivery. Could go with that.
Cannot find ASUS MB with onboard VGA and Asrock MB is microTX.

I should think not, I would be disappointed if you did. :p

Your choice is fine, at least you'll have some 'upgradeability' with it ... I'll go against normal practice here and suggest you get a 1gig memory stick, not two 512s as this board only has 2 memory slots. That way you can add another stick later.

The onboard video is not great either and will share your memory, don't expect games to play well, however, you have a PCI-E slot, perfect for when you have some spare cash to get a better video card.

Not so sure about your 300W PSU ... you may need something with a little overhead. :thumb:

Hi Muckshifter,
Thanks for the info. I will upgrade the psu. Not too worried about games, that's the reason for onboard graphics.
Cheers,
peahouse05:)
