With the choices of vista mail and live mail, has anyone used Thunderbird
and happy with it

I use Thunderbird for accessing newsgroups and prefer its functionality
there to the mail application included with Vista.

From an e-mail standpoint, I need an integrated mail/calendar/contact
solution so use Outlook.

Yes, and totally happy with it!

Mozilla's calendar program Lightning integrates with Thunderbird, although
this combo doesn't pack quite as good functionality as Outlook.

This combo is free of charge ! Did you buy the Office Suite to use
Outlook ???

Read what my posting says: Mozilla offers calendar integration for it's
e-mail client. I wasn't making suggestions on what office suite to obtain.

Thunderbird has been my primary email client for years now. I briefly
tried Vista's built-in Windows mail, but didn't much care for it;
haven't tried Live Mail, but then, it's not the sort of product I'd ever
use.

Tried it.
Didn't like it.

Yes. It is the only email app that does what I want, I think.

I _want_ access to both hotmail/live mail (web mail in general, maybe) and
pop accounts in one program.
I _want_ to have all email accounts delivered to one (or more) set(s) of
local folders, and I want to choose which goes where.
I _want_ to have all email sent from multiple email accounts go to the same
sent items folder(s), again of my choice.
I _like_ having integration with McAfee virus and spam protection (since it
came free with my computer) although this is not a must.

I have tried Live Mail (Desktop) for mail and in fact I'm using it for this
post, but the multiple accounts each having their own set of folders in
addition to the storage folders just made things too complicated to keep
track of, so I went back to Thunderbird. If MS ever enable the same
flexibility with accounts and folder groups that Thunderbird has I will
probably switch back, but for now I'm going to keep using Thunderbird. It
would also be nice to fix the Windows Live Contacts vs. Vista Contacts
integration, but again this is not a must.

Everyone's needs are different, but I use Thunderbird for both email and
newsgroups in Vista and am pretty satisfied with it on both counts.

I did all that with outlook 2003 on xp.
However I dumped McAfee and use Avast now so I can't say I have done exactly
that on my Vista machine.

I use Thunderbird, on occasion. I also use MS Outlook Express, on occasion.
I mostly use Pegasus Mail; except for news, for which I use 40tude Dialog.

I downloaded Thunderbird when Windows Live Mail (the version previous to the
current one) came out but didn't like it. I thought with all the extentions
for Thunderbird, I'd be happy with it but there was something about it that I
didn't like.

It's a nice e-mail client but I guess am just used to using Microsoft
products and went back to OE and now I'm using WLM Beta 2

(The samething happend with IE7 and it's awful UI with command buttons all
over the place: I downloaded Firefox but went back to IE7)

I am using TB and happy as a lark. Faster, leaner and easier than
WinMail. Its like having outlook express. Especially the auto fill email
addresses .I did not even bother trying the live stuff
