Anyone tried thunderbird newsreader by the same folks who did Mozilla?
I like it.

ThunderBird is a good email client which I use quite happily, but the
USENET component is horribly broken at this point.

In discussions in here, it seems quite well regarded by those with the
stuff to look outside of Microsoft's offerings.

I'm waiting for more stability and for the size to be *at least* cut in
half. That second requirement may not happen...if not, no big loss.
I'm really not interested in a 7mb mail client. I could deal with 3.5-
4 if the features warrant it.

Oh, I'm reading you post with it ^__^
Though there are some behaviours I still don't understand (why there's
always 1 thread fully open? Why doesn't TB scroll automatically to the
top of the thread list?) I use it to read news and I don't miss OE.

I'm much happier with version 0.2. - quite decent for both email and
usenet. The only annoyance is that should you use a news server which
requires a password, it appears to store the password on a per *group*
basis - thus readily giving the impression that the password store
facility is broken.

But with a little patience one finds that it is not.

If you are just reading newsgroups as opposed to downloading binaries,
yes, ThunderBird works just fine in spite of the quirks. However, I
suggest checking the bugs forum before deciding to use ThunderBird as
your sole newsreader to avoid disappointment. Thunderbird is very
early in it's development and, for now, I would suggest using xnews
(Windows) or Pan (LINUX).

Yes, I'm not an hardcore news user, I only read few newsgrops, post few
messages, I don't downoald any binary.

Thanks, I'll do.

On P2 Win2kpro

I have been using Thunderbird for several months, passing through
several upgrades, on the assumption that anything other than MS must
be better. My opinions:

0. Looks nice
1. Incredibly slow on every function, and bloated
2. Supports several different spellers
3. Though not directly, supports non-European alphabets.
4. Maintains antiquated Netscape Newsgroup structure.

All in all, though I tried very hard, its slowness and Netscape
features defeated me. I try not to use OE, but for my multilingual
correspondence it's the best, and it has a rational News system.
