Thunderbird and firebird

I posted these two questions to the Mozilla ng's and had no reply.
Perhaps they are more generic questions that you folks might be able to
answer.

1.Since installing the new versions of FireBird and Thunderbird, links in
TBird and Xnews open with Outlook Express BUT if I click on an htm or
html file FBird opens as it should. How do I set system to open mail
links in FBird?

2.To set up mailto: from FBird to TBird and I have to first set OE to be
the default mail client the change the setting of URL:mail to potocal.
Then it works fine
If after doing that I set TBird to be default client from its options
then the URL:mail to protocol disappears from the files list and the
mailto function no longer works. Apart from 'leave it alone' or 'if it
works don't fix it' have you any ideas?

The htm/html files open in Firebird because the Windows file type
associations are correct for them.

It sounds like your file type associations/URL types are messed up,
and I don't use Thunderbird, but some things to check/try are:

1) In Thunderbird's Options make it the default mail client
(leave OE alone).

2) In Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab,
check or change the 'E-mail:' drop-down menu to Thunderbird.

3) If Thunderbird's Options 'mailto:' URL type is not sticking, you
can change all specific file types/URLs to be associated with a
program
in Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types, or maybe similar
depending on your OS.

If still no joy, maybe someone else can help or try the Moz group
Boomer suggested.
