Hi, I've just installed Thunderbird 0.7.1 (as well as FireFox 0.9) and I
am really impress! I am writing this message using Thunderbird news-reader.

From what I've read, more users are switching over to FireFox and
Thunderbire, obviously for safety reasons. Safety in terms avoiding
problems with security holes in Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

Other than for patch updates, I don't think I will go back to Internet
Explorer nor Outlook Express. Sounds like a new class of BHO viruses are
being developed by groups of viral authors and IE is just not safe to
use anymore. Have others tried FireFox and Thunderbird? Do these two
apps seem to load faster and feel "safer"?

I personally like and recommend FireFox 0.8. I like 0.8 a little
more than 0.9 because I tend to download things and I like the
"Open" button in the downloads to open the folder containing
the file rather than open the file. It also seems to be a little
faster in operating than 0.9. I'm not sure that it is faster than
IE. Most everything works fine.

I've stuck with OE though. I keep the security settings in OE
set to restricted and view everything in plain text. I haven't
encountered any problems with OE in that context.

I've been using FireFox since March of this year.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply. I've never used FireFox 0.8, while versions 0.9
and .0.9.1 are the only two versions I'd tried so far. I actually
uninstalled 0.9.1 and put back 0.9. I "think" 0.9 loads just a bit
faster. Also, though I may be wrong, but 0.9.1 pop-up blocker runs
"quiet". That is, it doesn't announce itself when a pop-up is
intercepted. On the other hand, 0.9 has a tiny icon on the bottom left
of the browser where you can click to see a summary list of what were
the blocked pop-up messages.

As for Outlook Express, you are correct, the newsreader is fine. I'd
just wanted to test drive the Thunderbird. You know what, I like it.

I don't know what the future will be, but with so many security issues,
these two apps (FireFox and Thunderbird) may just become the industry
standard.

I stayed with Outlook Express for a long time because I couldn't find an
email program that handled multiple email accounts as well as OE (I don't
care for the seperate Inboxes that Thunderbird and other apps use). Then I
discovered Gemini (http://www.intellegit.com/software/gemini/). Although it
isn't free, it does everything I need for email and allowed me to wean
myself off of OE. OE still handles HTML messages better, but I like to
receive my messages in text mode anyway, so that isn't a big issue for me.

As more people switch to firefox the same problems will occur as with IE.
The only problem that I've found with firefox is it doesn't like Kelly's site
www.kellys-korner.com
It crashes the second the connection is made.
Probilally a JAVA related issue?

Kellys works for me with version 9.
might be a setting causing your to crash.

Mine doesn't crash but the cursor flickers. Some conflict somewhere.
Other than that, I find it is harder to go back to IE. Firefox is just
plain faster.

Can't help wondering, do these products come with spell-checkers?

If Mozilla/Firefox/Thunderbird even come close to becoming the industry
standard, the worm/bug/virus writers will then attack them and exploit the
weaknesses that all OS have.
Use what you wish but like us all, you have to live in the real world.

Just by using Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express, you've
increased your on-line security by about 60%. Now fix that other
40% and replace Internet Explorer with Mozilla. :-)
