Thumbnail viewing

Recently I went to the Microsoft website and ran a check to make sure that my
OS had all of the updates. It found an update that ended up being to Office.
The download was 50+ meg. Upon completion it added Outlook & Publisher.
Soon thereafter I noticed that the default photo viewer had changed from
Image Expert 2000 to Microsoft Photo Editor and I was now unable to see the
photo itself in thumbnail view. I can see the box, the .jpg icon in the
center of the box, & the name I gave the photo but not the image. Therefore
I have to open every picture to see what it actually is. I looked everywhere
but cannot find the place to make a check mark or delete a check mark so that
I can once again see the thumbnail. I am very confident that the download
changed something.

HELP!!!

==================
Try this, maybe it will restore the option:

go to...Start / Run and type:

"REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL"
(without the quotes)(Yes, there's
a space between 2 and S)

Click...OK.

A dialog box should report the following:

"DllRegisterServer in SHIMGVW.DLL succeeded"

===

To change your image file associations...
read the following:

(307859) HOW TO: Change File Associations
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307859

More info:

Try this...open an image folder and right click one
of your image files...from the menu, select...Open
With / Choose Program.

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list.

If you want the default...choose..."Windows
Picture and Fax viewer"

Once you make your selection...be sure to check
the box that says: "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file". (you will need to do this
for each format....jpg, .tif, .gif...etc.)

Also...you can right click an image and choose
Properties / Change Button...choose the program
you wish to use and click...OK / Apply / OK.

Also...in WinXP, you can go to...My Computer /
Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...

Immediately after the post I kept researching and came across this as well.
I did de-register the Microsoft recommended .dll file prior to getting the
WMF vunerability patch on 1/12. I suppose I thought the patch would
re-register the file but as we both now know, it had to be done manually as
you recommend below. Thanks so much!
