Thumbnail outline view with current slide?

In PowerPoint 2000, is there a way to have both a thumbnail outline view
with the current slide, like the default view for PowerPoint XP? I'd
like to be able to view the slides in the left pane while editing the
current slide in the right pane.

No. This is a feature in PPT 2002 (aka PPT XP) and 2003. You'd need to
upgrade.
