thumbdrive not recognized

I have a thumbdrive that I have used multiple times with different computers,
but the new computer we have at our office doesn't recognize it...it still
works at home and on different computers around the office...any suggestions?

Thumb drives react differently to different configurations. If you have
administrator privileges on the computer, you can diagnose the issue through
Device Manager or the Disk Management snap-in. Otherwise, ask your sys admin
for help.

Does any other USB device work in that USB port? Have you tried different
USB ports (and ones that are on a different controller, like using the front
USB ports versus the rear ones)?

Do you *Stop* the thumbdrive before removing it, or do you just remove it
when you are done using it?

If you do the latter, it will cause your thumbdrive to do as you describe,
and can also render it completely inoperative.

I can get to the Device manager area, but can't find a way to diagnose the
issue when the thumbdrive is not recognized

I have tried all of the usb ports on the computer...other devices seem to
work fine...

this is actually called a key drive, NOT a thumbdrive and so far I have not
seen a way to "stop" it...typically that function has shown up on the taskbar
with other devices, but not this one...

but thanks for the advice, anyway

A "key drive"? Does that mean it is the equivalent swiping a magnetic card
for authentication? Did you install the software on that host to read the
code on that key drive? Not sure what you mean by a "key drive". Give more
details, like make and model of the device.

That is just the model name - it works just like a thumb drive, except that I
have never noticed a way to "stop" it - you just treat it like a floppy - put
it in, use it and take it out...

The maker is ACP-EP and the Model is 2.0 Mobile Key Drive 512 mb

Thanks

If you are not stopping the unit, by using the Safely Remove Hardware icon
in the system tray, then you will have the behavior you are describing.
