thumb drive

I have a PNY thumb drive (USB Flash Disk). To get it to
show up under My Computer, I have to do a disconnect on a
different drive that I do not use. (I disconnect the F
drive.) Then when I plug in the thumb drive, it will
appear as the F drive in My Computer.

The problem is that this works very inconsistently. I end
up plugging and unplugging the thumb drive until finally
I see it as the F drive. When I finally get it to work,
I'm not even sure why it did. Is there a trick to making
this work more easily and consistently? I'm using Window
XP OS.

Had similiar issues with a thumb drive.. Check Control Panel , Systems tab
and check under USB devices to see if you have an 'enhanced USB device
controller' this will be your USB2.0 and if that is not present you have the
problem indicated..
Make certain you have Service Pack 1 installed as this enables the USB 2
support in XP... Oddly enough, my problem turned out to be a cheapo PCI card
(USB2.0) that i bought.. I bought another PCI card at twice the cost, but it
works flawlessly...The hardware was the problem, i believe because it was a
VIA chipset whereas the new card has an NEC, and this is what Microsoft
indicated was the preferred USB 2.solution.. This was a part of the
Knowledge BAse info on the USB standard that was being woked on at the
time...

From Device Manager window, under USB controllers, I
see "Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller." Is this
what you mean? I already have SP 1.
