Use of Thumb Drive

Have new PC with XP SP2. Everything works good including USB printer, input
devices, except Thumb Drive. When I insert Thumb Drive in any of the six USB
ports, my PC locks requiring restart to function. Same thumb drive works in
my Laptop and other PCs. Any suggestions?

Start>Run> Type MSINFO32 and click OK
Click the + sign at Hardware Resources
Then check the I/O and IRQs>Status column for USB devices if they are OK.

Checked MSINFO32 and USB lines are all "OK". I checked BIOS to see if there
is additional setting selections for USB (ie Pwr). I know the Thumb drive
needs up to 500 mw to function. Didn't see anything I felt comfortable in
changing. So for now I have DVD disks hanging on my neck.

My guess is the usb drive is conflicting with another device. Go to the
drive manufacturer web site and see what they say in the FAQs etc, there
might be some info relating to your drive. Have a look in Event Manager in
computer management in the control panael. Look for any errors or warnings
that point in the right direction. Depending on what you find another thing
to try is unplugging all other usb devices. Leave mouse and keyboard for
now. See if the drive works.

If you still have no joy clean boot in case a piece of software is
conficting. Clean boot by start, run, type "msconfig" no quotes. Go to the
start up tab and disable all the items then reboot and try the drive.

Repost any relevent info.
