Thumb drive support is GONE

For what seems like since I installed SP3 on XP Home, my system will not
recognize any thumbdrive that I place in the USB ports. Is there a way I can
just erase the usb mapping and start fresh without doing a reformat and
reinstall of the entire OS?

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight all the USB Root Hub
devices, Action menu, "Uninstall", then Action menu,"scan for hardware
changes", to find the device drivers again automatically.

Mark -thank you for the reply. One follow up if I could. I did what you
said and everything came back when I did a scan for hardware changes. The
thumbdrive gives the familiar sound when inserted, but it never comes up as
being recognized. there is a "removable disk F:" in my computer that when I
click on it, it comes up and says, insert a drive for drive F:. Any further
ideas?

Click Start. and type:
diskmgmt.msc
hit enter and look for the flash drive that you inserted. Rightclicking the
drive may let you initialize, or format the drive.
