This T7700 Vista Business laptop shows Windows 6000, but
Windows Update indicates that "Windows is up to date;
there are no new updates for this computer". The last
updates were SP1 for Office and Silverlight.

On the other hand, this unit has no problems and runs
perfectly. Should I leave well enough alone?

Could you be more specific about where is shows "Windows 6000"?

Hi, Ike.

Windows Update often tells me there are no new updates - but then an
immediate search for more updates finds one or more. :^{

So I've made it a practice to check often, and don't take the first report
as final.

Of course, your computer really may be up to date. For now. As a beta
tester, I installed SP1 on my Vista Ultimate x64 last month. But I have
Vista Ultimate x86 RTM installed as a dual-boot and I've been rebooting into
that every day or so for the past week, watching for the WU to offer SP1 for
it. On Monday, 3/18, it first reported no updates. Then there was one for
Windows Defender; I installed that and again WU said I was up to date. But
I insisted that it check for updates again and, voila! - there was SP1. ;<)

Now, WinVer reports that I'm running "Version 6.0 (Build 6001; Service Pack
1). I don't see the phrase "Windows 6000" anywhere. Where do you see that?

Sorry -- winver shows Version 6.0 (Build 6000). I just
checked Update again, and got this response:

Your Vista Business installation is running perfectly,
with 60 second boot and 15 second shutdown. All drivers
are compatible, and your applications work properly. You
do not need SP1, and we won't let you have it unless you
sign a NOBITCHING waiver.

As an old übergeek entering my 8th decade, the grass is
ever greener and I won't know what I'm missing until I
jump the fence. Where do I sign that NOBITCHING waiver
and get SP1?
