'This information service is not installed on your computer'

I have just tried to install Outlook 2007 on my free-standing desktop at
home, which has cable modem internet. Through Control Panel / Mail icon, I
created a profile, and the program got confirmation from the ISP.

But when I attempted to install a data file, using a .pst file already on
the computer, an error message appeared, simply saying 'This information
service is not installed on your computer'.

What does that mean? What do I need to do to resolve this?

Through Control Panel / Mail icon, I selected the 'Data file' option, and
found a file already existing on the computer.

Is this an Outlook PST file that has content? If it is, you can open Outlook
and simply use File > Open to open the PST. However, if this is a populated
PST from an earlier version of Outlook, please advise.

When I attempt to open Outlook, an error message appears saying, "Cannot
open your default email folder. Outlook cannot start because a data file to
send and receive mail cannot be found. To add a data file, such as a
personal folder file, double-click the Mail icon in Windows Control Panel."
I click on OK, which is the only option, and Outlook closes entirely.

When I go to Windows Control Panel / Mail icon, and configure a profile and
an email account, all's fine. But then, when I click on the 'Data files'
option , no data file is shown. If I click on the Add option, a browse
window appears, showing an Outlook personal folder file, in the default
location. If I click on that, trying to 'install' it (as I wrote in my
first message in this thread), the error message (which is the title of this
thread) appears. If I browse to a different folder and try to install an
Outlook personal folder stored elsewhere, the same result happens.

My earlier version of Outlook was 2003. Several days ago I did succeed in
installing Outlook 2007, but due to a problem, I uninstalled and later
re-installed. Something seems to have gone wrong in the uninstallation -
re-installed phase, which is now causing this problem. Thanks for your
help.

Hello Kathleen,

The short answer to your question is that I tried both a populated PST left
over from my previous installation of Outlook 2003 and also the default PST
created by the first installation (before I uninstalled it) of Outlook 2007.
Does that clarification open the way to an answer to my present problem?
I'm very eager to find a solution and get back to work on Outlook; please
advise.

Thanks very much.

Thomas
