Third party inkjet printer drivers

R

Ray K

The latest Canon driver for my i550 has four individual wide-range color
balance controls for intensity of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. It
also has a wide-range intensity control that affects all four inks at
once, and a three-level brightness control: light, normal, and dark.

Using non-Canon inks, on Kodak paper, I can't get really good color
balance. On a gray scale the darker steps tend toward green and the
lighter steps tend toward magenta.

Are there third party drivers that go beyond the Canon driver by adding
brightness and/or gamma controls for each ink? Where do I find them?

I'm using W98 and IrfanView to print JPGs.

(I know I should stick with Canon inks and paper for best results in my
Canon printer.)

Thanks,

Ray

The answer is no. The issue has nothing whatsoever to do with the driver,
the fact is that Kodak paper is crap. I've tried it in my i9950 (and, prior
to that my i9100) and it just won't dry and the colours are as you describe.

Who says you should stick with Canon consumables - I have never used either
Canon inks or Canon paper in either of mine, once the set that came in the
box was used). I use JetTec tanks and JetTec paper and the results are,
quite frankly, stunning (as well as being twice the capacity and half the
price!) What more could anyone ask?

I happen to get GREAT results with KODAK Ultima paper if I use the settings
that Kodak provides on their site for my Canon i960 . I do use CANON inks.

I guess each to their own.

Using the same printer settings, I ran the same test print on Canon Hi
Gloss paper. And just as you said, the magenta tint at the lighter
brightnesses disappeared. Also, detail was noticeably sharper (perhaps
because of the Canon high-gloss vs Kodak's soft gloss).

Thanks for the lead on JetTec. Do you refill your own cartridges/tanks?

Hard to believe that a company like Kodak would produce such a poor
product. Even the profile settings they recommend on their website for
the paper/printer I'm using give worse results that I found by trial and
error.

Thanks,

Ray

Greetings Ray,

The driver for your printer is what drives the printer etc. The Kodak One
Touch option that is included with EasyShare software relates to adjustments
to your printer driver if you use Kodak paper. If you do not then the
settings for the default or however you set your printer to perform will be
used.

The basis for our One Touch settings are based on the inks used by a
particular printer, i.e. Canon with Canon ink, HP with HP ink, and so on.
If you use refills, then there is no telling what the ink may be that you
are using as no testing can be done. If you stick to the ink that is
supplied by the printer manufacturer and you do choose to use the One Touch
feature it will yield great results on Kodak paper.

Check the general settings that we provide for any given paper we make to
work with most all popular printers. Click on the Settings link from the
page below.

No I don't refill (yes, I know with Canon it's supposed to be a no-brainer,
but I don't want to bugger up my brand new £500 printer). I'm not sure
whether JT inks and papers are readily available in the US, you might want
to check out their website (www.jettec.com) for availability. I pay £3.06
per tank (unfortunately I still have to buy OEM red and green tanks as JT
aren't working on any at the moment - and even those appear to be in short
supply!)

I would never have purchased Kodak paper - the pack I have was a gift (my
uncle works for an office supplies company and they're often given
promotional packs and other freebies. He gives his sons first pick and I get
what's left over!) They don't have any reason to print photos (he's more
into movie editing) so he gave the pack to me.

Don't waste your time with it. If you can get hold of some JT paper, I
strongly recommend you do so, otherwise Red River (which isn't available in
Europe) has a very good rep.

website isn't helpful at all. I'll watch for really good sales on Canon
and stock up.

Well buy Red River then - it's just as good!
