ink in Canon i550 becomes "dirty"

S

Hello group,

I have a strange problem with a Canon i550 ink jet.
it happened now several times that the magenta ink "changed its color".
And of course, the printouts look like rubbish. The printer belongs to
some relatives and I was not able to check what is happening myself, I
only see the result:

The whole, almost full ink tank has a purple-violet color instead of
the right magenta one. Since this happened now several times, I'd like
to exclude the posibility of the ink being "dirty" right from the
start. The funny thing is, that it has always been the magenta, never
cyan or yellow.

Has anybody ever encountered something like this? Perhaps by a full
waste tank? Is it possible that dirty ink flows back into the tank???

Best regards,

Stefan

I have seen this problem in this group. Contamination of ink due to leaky
seal of another ink cartridge. It basically requires a new head.

No doubt contamination from another colour, has the cart been refilled if so
to much ink, scrap the cart and buy fresh cartridge. If this fails the
printer has a fault and may need a new head. The repair will cost more than
the printer is worth if out of warranty.

The cartridges have not been refilled, they are bought. Yet, they are
not the original ones from Canon but from Certtone (www.certtone.de,
German company). Some other source suggests that spoiled ink occurs
more often with cheap ink. Is this true? I guess, viscosity should not
be that different.

Once you have ruled out defective ink cartridges it is down to the head.
Which needs replacing. Which you will find is not economically viable.

Stefan, Doubt it's the quality of the ink, I think you will find most inks
work on most printers, there are exceptions though. May be worth trying a
Canon cart if only to confirm. However you do say the ink in the cart is a
different colour so it may be just the carts used. I noticed this with a
Lexmark which came into me, the magenta was much darker than the
manufactures ink and when replaced with OEM all was well again.

Hi Shooter,

I was now able to watch that procedure for two days with the printer on
my desk. When I removed the magenta ink two days ago, all other colors
were fine. Now, I see the yellow one slowly becoming greenish-blue from
the bottom upwards. It seems like the cyan is diffusing into the
cartridge. I was able to confirm that the cyan was the last one to be
exchanged. Before, everything seemed to work ok for a while. In
addition, the seal of the cyan cartridge looks a bit uneven.
But it is not like that the cyan ink has been spilled across the whole
printer now. The cartridge is still full and the printer is rather
clean. Also the pads in the park position are rather dry.
I will try to replace the cyan and the spoiled magenta, clean out the
yellow and wait...

Thank you all for your support.

As a final thought Stefan, if there is no leakage into the printer then I
suspect the problem has to be in the head itself, this sort of cross coulouring
through a printhead is not unknowm.

Not if you clean it with cleaning fluid enough.
