I ran CPU-Z on my PC, as suggested, thanks, and got this as my present
m/board and chip:

CPU: Socket 478mPGA
Celeron 2.8Ghz
Mainboard: Intel D865 Perl
Chipset: Intel i864P/PE/G/i865P
Bus Speed 99.8
Rated FSB: 399.2
Memory: 2816

I think I am going to try and get a new CHIP only...NO motherboard.
Suggestions as to type? Will I see an appreciable diff do you think? Just
want to wring the best out of my existing PC...and will Vista Home Premium
"allow this"?

Look at the manual for your motherboard (find it online if you did not keep
it/never had it) and get the fastest non-celeron CPU you can for your
motherboard. Also - I suggest 1.5GB or more of memory if you plan on
running Vista 'effectively'.

tks for reply Shenan.

I have 2.8gb RAM, - so covered there. Vista is running pretty well, but I
am just thinking to get a performance boost with new chip now as I dont know
how long I'll be able to even buy new chips for my 'old' mother of a
motherboard

Whatever specific CPU your motherboard will support; consult the manual.

Not unless the new CPU is significantly faster than the original.

It should.

2.8GB of memory is an extremely unusual number...
Where/how did you manage that?
(Or does your motherboard have shared video memory?)

You have to research what type of new chip your motherboard will
accommodate.

Hi Rod, In all seriousness you should consider a new motherboard as well.
With your existing board being a 478 pin housing for your 478 Celeron chip
you will find that new 478 cpu's will be as rare as hens teeth. Maybe a check
of eBay might come up with a faster 478 chip for you.

If you choose to stick with Intel the socket is 775 as opposed to 478. If
you do choose to go this way also check that you can still use your memory in
a new board.

I hope that this was helpful.
