I really need some help with FSB settings on motherboard

I've got an HP Pavilion 4535 that I've pulled all of the innards out of.
Motherboard is a "MEW-VM rev 1.02". My research shows that this is likely
an Asus OEM board made specifically for HP to use in a number of their small
tower configurations. There are a number of hookups and various items that
are just "screen printed" on the mboard and not actually implemented, which
leads me to believe that this was the basis for a lot of different
configurations HP used over a year or so. Unfortunately, the fact that it
is OEM also means that I can't find a motherboard manual anywhere at ASUS or
at HP. This means I am left to go by clues on the motherboard itself.


After removing it from the PC and getting a closer look, here is what I
saw:

I would have used a photo, but unfortunately my digital camera won't focus
up that close, so I had to do a drawing. Obviously, I'm not a talented
artist, but I hope the rendering gets the point across.

The board is socket 370, and the system came with a Celeron 400 MHz
processor installed. BIOS chip is the plcc32 type, & says "MWVM4 1.00".

Here's what I need to figure out:

1) highest clock multiplier this will support (I ran sandra & some other
utilities that will normally tell me this info about the motherboard, but
they did not display it this time for some reason)

2) I'm having trouble figuring out the jumpers for the front side bus
settings

I'm at a complete impasse regarding the clock multiplier question, and
have no idea what else to try to figure it out.


As far as the FSB settings, take a look at my drawing. Anybody have any
idea what the "X" setting is? The screen print on the board shows settings
for 66 MHz, 100 MHz, 133 MHz, and "X". I've never seen this "X" before, and
am left wondering what the heck it is.

If I could set the board to 133 MHz FSB, I could pop this Celeron 400 out
of here and put at least a 1 GHz P3 in there. That would make a world of
difference, because I'm trying to upgrade it for my Grandparents to use.
400 MHz Celeron just wouldn't cut it for most modern software, etc. I can
get a 1GHz P3 for about $18, though these days, so I think it would be worth
it.

The problem here is that the Jumpers are a bit confusing. If they exactly
matched the FSB info screen printed on the board, this would be easy.
However, they don't.

Take a look at the drawing again. Note the FSB0 and FSB1. I'm a bit
confused about which is which. I THINK FSB0 is the one along the bottom,
and FSB1 is the one along the top. Am I right, or wrong?

Then, I notice that there are pins, and a jumper on the bottom 3. Jumper
is on 2-3, which would make sense if the system was set to 66 MHz FSB for
the Celeron 400.

What really, REALLY confuses me, though, is the fact that there don't seem
to be any pins or jumpers along the top row, where I think FSB1 is supposed
to be.

Where FSB1 JP1 should be, there is a square that is a slightly golden
color. Where FSB1 JP2 & JP3 should be, there is just grey metal. On the
back, it appears that pins simply were never soldered on for some reason.

Anybody have any ideas?

If my assumptions are correct, then I THINK I could move the jumper on
what I believe is FSB0 to 1-2 from the current 2-3. Then I could short the
connections for what I believe is FSB1 between JP1 & JP2, and it SHOULD
support a 1 GHz cpu. The strange thing is, currently there don't seem to be
any connections for FSB1 between JP2 & JP3, which would seem to be necessary
for 66 MHz operation. That one has me confused as well, because currently,
the Celeron 400 was operating with only a single jumper connecting what I
believe is FSB0 JP2 & JP3. According to the silkscreened chart, it
shouldn't even be able to run that way, unless I'm misinterpreting it.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm hoping that I can spend under $20 for a
CPU that is about 3X as powerful, and get a decent system for my
Grandparents that way. I'm just used to having a motherboard manual to go
on, so I feel like I'm in the dark here.

I do have a lot of parts sitting around, like a spare DVD burner, extra
hard drive, etc., so it would not cost me much of anything to upgrade the
rest of the system. It isn't really an option to buy them a full system,
especially if I can just upgrade the CPU for $20 or less. Thanks for any
suggestions you might have!
