There is no disk in the drive

O

OldMac77

Hi All,

(Dell Dimension 3100/E310, Windows XP)

I am unable to read or write to CD's yet I am able to read/copy DVD's
on my computer. It reports the error message ""There is no disk in
the drive...."

My computer has the factory installed DVD/CD writer and an external
Memorex drive. The problem exists for both drives. It is unlikely
that it is a hardware problem as the external Memorex drive works well
on another computer. Windows reports no problems with both devices.

Any suggestions as to what may be the cause and a possible solution?
(I have searched many groups and forums but none of the solutions
posted has worked.)

Many thanks,

Oldie

Boot the machine with a bootable CD, e.g. your WinXP installation
CD or with your recovery CD. If it works then your CD drive is
probably OK. If it does not then there is something wrong with
your CD drive or the controller.

Remember to set the BIOS so that it uses the CD drive as its
primary boot device.

The most likely cause of the problem is that the laser which reads/write CDs
is not working.
The laser which reads/writes DVD is working.
There are two separate ones.
The solution for this cause of the problem is a new drive.
