I select the Classic theme and go through all the motions. Every two days or
so, the system resets back to the default XP theme. I then have to set it
back to Classicmode. How can I stop XP resetting the theme like this?

Disable the Themes service. It is not needed for Classic theme.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Themes | Click the V next to Startup type |
Select Disabled | Click the Apply button | Click the Stop button |
When the Themes service has stopped, click OK | Close Services

Hope this helps. Let us know.
