Themes not working

Hi,

I am new to Frontpage and I am having trouble with themes. One one computer
I built a simple webpage with themes and it displayed one way on the server,
another way on my computer when I did the "preview in browser" and yet
another way in the design mode. On some buttons were missing and on others,
the colors were different or missing.

So, I went to a new version of Frontpage installed on a different computer
and without connecting to the webpage, I attempted to apply a theme. On this
computer, with the brand new install of Frontpage, the theme doesn't work at
all, except to change the background to the same as the background on the
selected theme.

I did a repair on the install on the new computer and still themes doesn't
do anything except change the background. No buttons, no links, no tool bars.
etc.

Any help would be surely appreciated so that I can get the brand new
install, in the default condition to actually work correctly when I select a
theme.

Thanks

Update.

The specific information for the failure now is that all of the text and
buttons are displaying but only the design one has the correct color. Some
of the stuff on the server is in Black and White and all of it in "preview in
browser" is black and white.

You have to create a navigation structure for the site to see the button, banners, etc.

Thomas,

Thanks a lot for the help, I don't think I would have ever figured that one
out.

Thomas,

I created three pages, setup the navigation view and made two the children
of the others. I also stepped through the navigation menu.

It seems like it must be broken. I have been using computers for twenty
years and programming for almost as long. If they at all make this
intuitive, then you would think that after all most a week of effort that I
would be able to get started.

Well, finally got the links to work in themes, and now both computer have the
same problem, the color is missing. The color appears either missing or
different on preview, on the website and in design view.

I can't believe this is so difficult. Writing vision system algorithms is
much easier.

Which color is missing?
Don't use the Preview button, use File | Preview in Browser

Hi Rob,

When I do the file preview in browser all colors are missing (sometimes) and
they are not missing on the website, usually.

The colors, are these background colors in the shared border area of the page?

Hi,

The problem is with the background colors for the shared borders coming out
monochrome some of the time.

Are you publishing/viewing the site via http on a server that has the FP2002 extensions, as they are
required for shared border backgrounds?

Hi Thomas,

Yes, the server has Frontpage Extensions. It seems to work okay on the
server more often, except for part of the top will be gray and on my home PC
it fluctutes between all black and white and partially colored to colored.

It also works okay until I get the themes working. And once I got it
working by deleting a .pwt file. But then it quick working correctly again.
The problem seems to move too. Sometimes it doesn't work right at home,
sometimes it doesn't work right on the server, and often it doesn't work
right when I do the select preview.

Also, sometimes things won't show up at all after I put them in, when using
themes. For example, I finally got the links to show up and then it didn't
actually show up on the webpage, but only in design view.

Have you tried using a different theme?

Yes, I finally just gave up on themes completely.

Now I am trying only the shared borders. I just did a simple page with
shared borders and it appears on the preview showing the links and the back
color as red. When I preview in browser I get no color, no links and only
the Page title in a banner. (which I setup.)

Anyway, even without themes I still have the problem of no color. I have
pretty much given up on themes as not possible to work with. I am about to
give up on Frontpage as too complex too and go back to my other project of
attempting to build an intelligent machine.

Thanks for you help. It must be the case that both my computers have some
sort of problem with their installation, or with the front page extensions.

Video drivers?
Did you ever publish it to the server so we can see it?

Hi Rob,

I think I finally have it working. What I had to do is to first select
shared pages, format the color, (which didn't actually work) and then select
themes, and apply the themes. The theme doesn't actually use its own colors
(which never worked anyway) but uses the colors from the Shared borders, that
didn't previously show.

Also, I HAVE to do it in that very specific order, as if I do it in a
different order, then I will get semi-random seeming results where the colors
either will or won't show, on either the web, the preview, or the design page.

Oh, the other thing is that even though I apply the color to all of the
pages, I do so by saying that I only want to apply it to the home page. If I
attempt to apply it to all of the pages, it comes out black and white, but if
I only apply it to the home page, then it properly adds color to all pages.

Thanks for your help,

Daniel

whew, that ain't the way it works in my FP...but glad you figured something out!

keep in mind that if whole thing has stemmed from modifying a theme...you have to modify the theme, save it as a new theme name, turn off the old theme, and then re-apply the new theme.
