"The version of windows on your computer is newer than the version

There has to be a simple work-around for this. I just recommended to a new
client to purchase a bunck of XP home to pro upgrades as a volume license,
and most of the machines are giving me "The version of windows on your
computer is newer than the version on the CD". I've uninstalled SP2 on a
couple of the boxes and that seems to allow me to upgrade. SP2 doesn't always
un-screw itself out of the system very niceley, and those are the ones giving
me grief. Support was useless and after spending $1,600 in licenses they
still wanted to charge me $35 to tell me what I know MUST be a simple
work-around. (Ther's a reason Linux is gaining folks).

I'm sure someone has to have the answer. I tried searching this forum and
couldn't come up with anything. If it's here, I missed it... Sorry.

Thanks in advance.

All you need to do is make a SP2 slipstreamed version of your
current VL Windows XP Pro and then upgrade using the new CD.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)

Looks pretty straightforward.

I have to admit though, I'm still pretty irked at the support (or lack
thereof) from Microsoft. It really irritates me that my client spent that
much money on something that doesn't work as advertised, and the company
isn't willing to get a fix to us (or for that matter even talk to us without
charging more money). Microsoft should at least provide us with an ISO of the
latest version. They could even put a liknk on the same eOpen license page
the license info is available on.

....sorta' makes Packard Bell Support look GOOD...

Thanks for the info, Carey.
I'll give it a shot when I get done with the machines that the upgrade works
on.

Thanks again.

The slipstream isnt an answer to youre problem,xp pro isnt upgradeable from
xp home, the "upgrade" is for older windows OS.Hence, although slipstream
might work, microsoft recommends a clean install to pro if home is present...

Andrew is again,

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Show us where Microsoft states this? You never do
backup your misguided information.

I can backup that XP Pro is an approved upgrade from Home.

You can't can you? Show me yours.

Here's mine.

Absolutely!
Microsoft "claims" that it's the proper path. I've done this upgrade for
people before and it seemed to go pretty well. Of course, they may have
shipped me a CD they've had laying around since 2001! This one arrived at my
clients location Tuesday.

I guess maybee $1,600 isn't a lot of money for most folks, but around these
parts when you spend that much it's normal to expect whatever you've
purchased to actually work as advertised. I shouldn't have go go through all
that just to make the article provided by Microsoft to work. As far as I can
tell, we spend $1,600 on a cocktail coaster. (Can you tell I'm still really
miffed about this?)

Sorry for the vent.....

Carey,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
That worked like a champ. Real easy to do and it solved the issue.

I've made a couple copies for my client to keep on hand in case I get hit by
a bus.

I would have responded sooner but I was trying to work off-hours to set up a
couple PDCs, upgrade and re-configure the workstations at my clients
locations and it just about took every waking moment until now!

Thanks again Carey.
(and all else who were constructive.... "Michael"...<g>)
