The update is a downgrade!

I have a client who allowed Windows Update to provide the update over the
weekend, and ever since, she has experienced the following three symptoms:

- Cannot browse with IE by manually entering a URL. IE hangs.

- Cannot navigate her hard drive from Save As in any Office product or
during an Insert File operation in Outlook. System hangs

We traced a 100% correlation to the presence of verclsid.exe running as a
process. At times, there were more than one running. Removing the process
fixed the problem, but only until the next time that one of those operations
was attempted, at which point verclsid was replanted in memory.

My fix was to simply delete the file from her SYSTEM32 folder -- a solution
that I am not altogether comfortable with, despite her repeated claims of my
being a miracle worker.

I'd like to see some discussion about this. What is the intended purpose of
this process and I wonder why the behavior my client's Vaio desktop was so
counter to that intention. And I wonder if there is an implication to my
quick fix...

Where have you been? It's been discussed and cussed and several fixes
posted here. Most popular seemed to be to roll back the update and wait for
the next one.

How to use Google (to search for the symptoms before you post..)

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

(A google/google groups search would have given you this solution:)

Your solution was incorrect.
MS06-015 is known to cause some issues with some software.
The solution is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

For "discussions" on it - actually search for it - because they are already
there.

I read today I forget in which group that the poster uninstalled the
problematic hotfix and installed the updayed one (released today) and all is
well

Rick
Which update was it and when - there has been plenty of posts recently re
the last group of 4/5.

I have been waiting for this announcement - tried the link you gave but said
the download is not available - go search for a download

Sorry for offending your sensibilities. I always search Google Groups first.
In this particular case, my search was deficient. Nobody's perfect; perhaps
I wasn't thorough enough this time...

I just tried downloading it with the link, works for me.
Maybe the site was very busy (overloaded) at the time you tried it

Mr. Goose1978
You may want to try and use the windows restore process. To restore
before the point of the updates.

This should work with not problem.

Hi mr goose
I did that prior to a complete uninstall - Restore was
'incomplete...computer cannot be restored to that date...no changes made to
your computer' or words to that effect.
From what I have read over the past few days, others had sudden problems
with SR - so I uninstalled 4 out of the 5.

Forgot to mention - double posting the same message was a possible kick-back
from the O.E. download ;-) ;-)

Your link worked - Map's didn't.
All done and dusted now - feel a bit happier.
Thanks Kurt.

is the direct download link to Version 2 of the KB908531 patch,
otherwise know as the patch to patch the patch that closes the
vulnerability in Windows Explorer that could allow remote code
execution. Version 2 is probably easier to spit out though. ;-)

Sure, but MAP link works for me. I think you may have an URL wrap issue
with OE.

The revised update still does not resolve all the problems. I still
cannot edit my HP wireless keyboard control panel applet to change what
five of the Internet keys do. The "buttons" tab is missing with the
revised KB908531 update installed. It reappears when I uninstall the
update. HP chat suggested system recovery, which gets me back to the
factory-shipped default -- not a satisfactory option!
