the size of my headers differ on pages of my document. I cannot make it
smaller by resizing it on the ruler or changing it in page setup. any
suggestions as to how I can resize the headers?

Jezebel,

your comments are not very helpful. the reason there is a header is because
there are page numbers in the footer. the footer sizes do not differ but the
header sizes do. please only respond to the post if you actually have
something to say that will help me. i am very frustrated at the moment,
because this is an important document and it cannot look like a 5 year old
formatted it.

oh yes,

there don't need to be any text in the header for it to affect your
docuement. text book definitions and practical experience do not always
corrolate.

Mary Jane,

Check under page setup...layout that the two boxes under headers footers
that refer to different odd and even / different first page are not ticked.

I can see Jezebel's point about content... if the above doesn't help make
sure there aren't any spurious return characters in your headers..

thanks matt,

but i have done/checked EVERYTHING that was suggested even though I have
already checked it one zillion times!!! i really need someone to reprogramme
word so that it actually does what you want it to do and not what it thinks
it should be doing.

On that point I can't disagree... after all I know what I want... word has
to guess.

All I can think of off the top of my head is to select the first page and
make sure that the page setup refers to whole document not just this section.
Unfortunately I can't figure how to do a global change back if a document has
picked up different settings for each page.

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, make sure the vertical alignment is set to
Top and not Center.

Hi Mary,

After reading the above threads I have a simple suggestion that is sometimes
overlooked. If you normally work with paragraph marks turned off, you may
have some empty paragraphs in the head. Turn paragraph marks on and see if
there are any paragraph marks showing. If there are, delete them.

Other than this, I think you have gotten the best advice from the others.

I was just wondering if it's actually the header size that's different or if
it just looks that way. Could it be that some pages begin with a paragraph
that has spacing before applied?

Or I wonder if you have multiple sections in the document with different
header sizes in them?
