The size of a data file

I moved from Gmail POP3 to Gmail IMAP protocol. So I created new account in
Outlook 2007. But I keep the old data file, cause there is my calendar, notes
and so on. Problem is, that even I erased all emails, the old data file has
still over 1GB (it was like that before I erased mails). Why? What makes it
be that big?

Outlook doesn't automatically compress the pst to reclaim the vacated drive
space. Basic rule of thumb is think of PST files like Access databases. As
you delete/remove items from a PST, the file doesn't shrink. Outlook just
reuses that whitespace when needed.

Now with that said, right click on "personal folders" folder and select
properties > advanced button > compact.

ps - don't use OL2007, but hopefully the steps are close to OL2003
