connecting mail account to existing data file

I use imap with gmail in Outlook 2007. I want to move my data file (.pst) to
another computer. I added a new data file on the new computer, selecting my
existing .pst file that i had copied over, and can see the data in the folder
tree. However, there are 2 problems. 1- The "Categories" i had setup show
the names, but not the colors of the categories. 2 - I created a new mail
account, but it created a new .pst for my imap folder, and i want it deliver
mail to my existing .pst file i copied over. I cant figure out how to link a
mail account to the existing data file. Searched for, but cant find the
answer. please help!

Whatever for? Just create an IMAP account on the other computer and Outlook
will sync with the server and show you exactly the same data as on the
original PC.

The colors are local to each PC. See this:

Whenever you create an IMAP account, it creates a new PST for it. Since all
messages are maintained on the server, there's no need to transfer the PST.

i organize my mail using "Categories". The gmail server doesnt store the
category information. i was hoping to create a mail account on the new
computer, and connected it to the existing .pst folder i copied from the old
computer, which has my messages tagged with the categories. The new mail
account i created downloaded my messages from gmail, but the mail didnt have
the categories assigned. how can i restore this data? Thank you!

I don't believe you can connect an IMAP account to a pre-existing PST, but
an approach such as described here might work:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/moveimap.asp .

That link is for moving a .pst on the same computer, where you are
reconnecting the same account to the same data file. it doesnt look like
there is a way to do this on a different computer. I cant risk losing mail.
i guess i should be organizing my mail using folders instead of categories
since gmail does save folder info. i just like applying multiple categories
to a message, which cant be done with folders. I'm surprised i cant find
more documentation on this. am i the only one using categories with gmail
imap?? Thanks for your responses. if you think of something, please post.
