The simplest of networks doesn't work

Hello, I need help with this type of connection. I have two computers:
XPDesktop and XPLaptop connect together via cable, before it worked like a
charm, but after a virus attack that I removed (infected file:winupdater.exe)
it doesn't work anymore as in when I connect to the internet, (the XPDesktop
is the one that connects), XPLaptop doesn't recognise it at all, I tried
repairing but I get this stupid and pointless message:
"Purging and reloading the remote cache name table of NetBT" blah blah blah
I'm gonna go insane in a minute and any help would be appreciated
