the keyboard.

ie... when I try to type an @ ... I get an inverted commas sign... and
vice versa...

(obviously I'm going opposite to make it right)...

but how can we configure it so that it's normal...

I'm running winxp sp2... on a fujitsu laptop.

You are either using a US keyboard with a UK keyboard layout or (more
likely, since you call them "inverted commas") a UK keyboard with a US
keyboard layout

Change the keyboard layout in Control Panel | Regional and Language Options
| Languages | Details | Settings.

the keyboard is US layout and now I've changed the language to English
US...

this has cleared the above problem but now...

I get a dollar sign instead of a pound sterling sign.

the only difference is that I've inputted the US keyboard (it is a US
keyboard) into the control panel settings...

English UK should work correctly with a UK keyboard layout.. is that what
you have?.. maybe you do not have the correct keyboard?..

There is a language setting, and there is a keyboard layout setting. Which
ones did you use? You might have to play around if you are trying to use a
US keyboard layout but attempting to use a UK language character set.
