"The Remote Computer has Ended The Connection"

S

Si

I have a home computer running Windows XP Prof and a Work Laptop, also
running Windows XP Prof.

A couple of months ago, when working at home, I used to use Windows Remote
Desktop Connection from my Home PC to work on my Work Laptop (via local
LAN). I have had no problem using RDC in the past.

However, since my Work Laptop was upgraded to SP2 (I think) I am unable to
connect to it using RDC. I get the message "The Remote Computer Has Ended
The Connection".

RDC is enabled in the System/Remote tab. I have tried it with the Firewall
enabled/disabled on both machines. RD is checked as allowed on the Windows
Firewall. I have tried disabling RDC on the System/Remote tab, rebooting
then re-enabling it again and I still get the same problem as described
above.

Can anyone suggest a way of rectifying this problem?

Regards,

Si.

Check the troubleshooting tips on this page...

http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/RemoteDesktopSetupandTroubleshooting.html

Beyond that you might try this...

1. Re-registering Remote Desktop using the command line that
follows...Reboot the PC after doing this...

regsvr32 remotepg.dll

2. Doing a "repair installation". Note the warnings on the page...

Very interesting.

However I am still stuck on what action I need to take to get RDC working on
my laptop again.

I can RDC from my laptop to my home PC, but not from my home PC to my laptop
(which is what I want to do).

Sooner AL - can you help further?

Have you looked at the suggestions I posted earlier?

I tried the regsvr32 remotepg.dll command, which completed successfully,
however did not resolve the problem.

This is a work laptop, which runs perfectly, never blue screens, no problems
with anything else, so I doubt my IT department will perform a re-install.

I worked my way through
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/RemoteDesktopSetupandTroubleshooting.html

many of things I had already tried, others I tried, without resolving the
issue.

Terminal Services are running, the port is listening, I don't have a router
to complicate issues, the firewall is ticked to allow RDC traffic, and the
port is not blocked.

I have seen other people with this issue, but never seen a resolution to the
problem.

Any further ideas?

Si.

Your trying to access your work laptop with RDP, correct?

Can you access the laptop from another PC besides the one that is failing?
Its possible the problem is on your home PC and not the laptop.

I am still having this problem. Can anyone else assist?

A simple test. From your home PC ping IP address of your laptop. Is it
successful?

Peter,

Yes, that worked perfect, all times <1ms.

I can connect from my laptop to my home PC, but not the other way round.

Just to recap, my laptop is Windows XP, RDC is enabled, ticked in the
firewall.

When I connect to the laptop via RDC, I get a black screen up, with the bar
along the top with my laptop's IP address and an error message in the centre
of the screen stating "The remote computer has ended the connection".

Install MS05-19 on your laptop, reboot, try again;

I have installed the above, rebooted and I am still getting the same
problem/symptoms.

Check laptop event log for errors. What is it doing when you try to connect
to it?

Try to upgrade video driver on the laptop. Set driver hardware acceleration
(Settings | Troubleshoot) to full.

Having the same situation. Was working fine, all of the sudden it
stops. Trying to connect from one computer on my home network to
another with "the remote computer has ended the connection". Verified
the computer is listening on standard port. Disabled firewall, spyware
scanner and virus scanner. Enabled and re-enabled and tried every fix
I could find in the forums. Checked every service, pinged etc.

Finally I rolled back to XP service pack one and once again, my remote
desktop connection is working. Nothing different, no changes other
than uninstalling SP2. Just to verify the experiment I reinstalled SP2
and, as expected, I started to get the same error message.

Don't know what to do here - it seems that to use the function I'm
going to have to stick to SP1!

Any other suggestions out there?

I wanted to unistall SP2, however I am unable to do this.

This problem only started after I had upgraded to SP2.

Can anyone else help with this problem?

I have exactly the same issue here and have tried everything mentioned in
this topic. I don't want to go back to XP SP1 though. Is there really no
solution to this problem? Any suggestions?

Hi, Everybody,

I encountered same issue, but no solution so far, if somebody who
get to fix the problem please CC to me, thanks in advance.

Actually, I already found a solution and it works, but it may not be a final
solution.
Replacing the file termsrv.dll with an earlier version. To do that, boot the
computer with Safe Mode. Then do this command:

copy c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\termsrv.dll c:\windows\system32\.
