The red x problem

C

Charlie Bress

This is occurring in IE.
The OS is XP Pro with SP2 and auto updates.
I have the administrator account and my wife has a limited account.
On a web page she likes the page seems to load correctly except that a panel
at the top of the page that normally has a search function displays the red
x instead of the search box. The background color of the panel is normal.
If I go to the same site from my account, the missing image is there using
IE.

If she uses Firefox instead, the missing search function displays normally.

This also raises the question of Internet Option settings. Are they unique
for the two accounts or is there only a single setting that all users share?

Hi,
Security settings and other Internet Options can be set on a per user basis.
Toolbars, BHOs and browser add-ons are user selectable/configurable. I would
first go to Internet Options> Security in the limited account and reset
Internet Zone to default.

From IE> Tools> Manage add-ons. Disable add-ons to see if one of them is
blocking this item.

Then...
Disable (for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers,
security, toolbars and other add-ons for IE, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at
any program that might be interfering with IE. You may have to reconfigure,
reinstall, or not reinstall, a program. Turn on the Windows Firewall (from
Control Panel or Security Center) before disabling a third-party firewall.

Note: Some ad-blockers block GIFs if they're a size commonly seen in banner
ads.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don:

Thanks for the post and all your hard work supporting the community.

I have a slightly different version of the problem. I'm launching IE 6 (XP
SP2) against a file from a program and get the little red x problem. I'm
suspecting a security issue. What zone do files launch in? i.e. what zone is
used for file://c:/file.html????

The reason that I suspect a security issue is that when I use the IE edit in
front page command, everything appears as expected.

More information. It really is strange. The image is created on the fly by a
vb 2005 program. It won't work regardless of where it's stored on the hard
drive. (Remember that it shows up ok in FP, so FP is somehow more forgiving
than IE.) OTH if I stick the name of one of the bitmaps in c:\windows in the
HTML, that image displays fine. (HTML available on request, though right now
I'm concentrating on what might be wrong with the bmp file.)

Suggestions please?

Al

Hi,
XP SP2? I'd think you would be seeing the IE information bar telling you
about blocked active content.

To hazard a guess...
Try renaming the HTML file to .HTA
or
Internet Options> Advanced> Security> check "Allow active content to run in
files on My Computer ."

In the unlikely event that I'm on the right track, option #3 is to place the
Mark of the Web on the HTML page.
