The Real WWW Inventor

M

Methus

This news article seems to contradict Al Gore's claim that he invented it:
ESPOO, Finland (AP) - The scientist credited with inventing the World Wide Web, Tim
Berners-Lee, has been awarded the first Millennium Technology Prize. The award, a
euro1 million cash prize, equivalent to $1.2 million, is among the largest of its
kind, and was awarded for the first time.

Berners-Lee is recognized as the creator of the World Wide Web while working for the
CERN Laboratory in the early 1990s, the European center for nuclear research near
Geneva, Switzerland.

Why anyone could even seriously consider that Al Gore invented the WWW, when
he could not even tell the difference between "chad" and "hanging chad", is
beyond me.

Nobody ever stated Al Gore "invented" the WWW. it preceded him and was a US DARPA project.

What you can contribute to Al Gore is strong growth and use of the Internet. Al Gore
instituted *many* US Gov't. policies and regulations such as "digital signing", "PDF
deliverables" and "electronic forms" to streamline Gov't. Gore was a strong proponent of
the use of the Internet to bring Gov't. and constituent closer.

Berners-Lee was NOT the creator of the WWW either ! He just found a way to make the use of
the Internet easier for the "common folk".

The TRUE inventor of the WWW was the US Gov't. via DARPA.

and if you believe Al Gore did that, I'll sell you my rights to "Arpanet"

yea. and thinks to Gore - we all drive hydrogen cars.

Gore needs to go back to his tripping LSD days. he's having bad flashbacks.

I don't have to "believe" it.

I won't succumb to your lack of knowledge because I "know". Been there, done that and got
the tee shirt.

He didn't claim any such thing. See

http://www.firstmonday.dk/issues/issue5_10/wiggins/#w2

And Berners-Lee "invented" the web - not the net; different things however
closely bound together or perceived to be one and the same thing

jp

- And as for bright sparks, well, Gore may seem stupid, but I'd take stupid
before deranged and dangerous anyday

From what I know (probably not much), the WWW IS the "Web" ("WWW" is the
acronym for "World Wide Web"), and is a super-group of interconnected
Internet IP addresses, so if we are to be totally honest, the WWW is almost
tantamount to "the Internet". (Unless, of course, you are totally anal and
geeky, in which case it can be what ever you want it to be. The rest of us
don't really care what you think.)

By the way, Gore was an extremely poor loser. And that is exactly what he
was -- a loser.

The "web" and the "internet" are two distinct things. The Web (really
broswer and server aplications) ride ontop of the internet. The
internet as we know it started in the early 80's (the day the Apranet
swtched from Arp to IP protocol is a good a birthday as any.)

TB Lee invented HTML aka "The World Wide Web", the browser, and the first
html server. A nice day's piece of work.

Gore wrote and passed laws allowing the public to use the Internet.
Up to about 1986 you had to be a in a University, a defense contractor,
or a computer manufacturer to have access to the internet, with
serious walls keeping the general public out.

It's scarry that the OP doesn't know the difference between the web
and the internet. We should go back to 1985, test people and issue
internet driver's licenses.

He claimed to have invented the phrase "information superhighway" in some govt report or a book he wrote. He was a evangelist for mainstream internet use when most pollies had not heard of it. And he does share credit, to a degree, in the sucess of the internet.

But as he's YOUR ex VP you should know more about him than simple convict stock like me.

Methus" <[email protected]> Seems to have his VPs
mixed up. This list of quotes is mostly attribruted to Dan Quayle,
although to be accurate, I believe some of the Quayle quotes
are apocryphal. Someone with spare time can research it
at http://www.snopes.com/.

Mr. Methus may want to use www.dictionary.com to look up "apocryphal".

Which is all besides the point; Mr Gore DID write and pass
legislation, without which we wouldn't be having this chat unless
we all worked for the acadamic-militrary-complex.

I'm from Missouri and you'll have to show me the dates that you allege DQ made all
of these comments. I'll assume these to be true quotes until proven otherwise:
