The Operation Failed, Outlook 2003

I am trying to use Outlook 2003 (windows XP) with Gmail POP, and when I
close outlook and then change my mind & try to re-open it, it gives me a
box that says "The Operation Failed".

This account had originally been used for an exchange (default) server,
then the gmail one, then Exchange was removed and the Gmail one was made
the default.

This problem occurs when I close outlook, and once the screen has
cleared, if I re-launch outlook, I'll get the message box (the only
option is OK). I then have to click to launch outlook again and it
appears to work fine.

I've changed (created a new) profile, and deleted the old original one,
but the problem still occurs. I've made it to where Word is not the
default email editor as well. Taken care of anything I thought might
would be the problem, but it still occurs.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Have you checked your application event viewer for any Office-related errors?
Look for the event ID number and source of any errors you find.

I've checked the application event viewer, so far, nothing has been
written into it.

I will see if I can reproduce the problem a few times in a row & check
again.

I've been able to re-produce the error, nothing ever appears in the
Application log. It's just a box that limits the top line, and says
"The Operation Failed" with an OK the only action you can take.

The error I am getting is described here:

http://blogs.msdn.com/omars/archive/2005/04/11/407229.aspx

They said:

"When I close Outlook and re-open it after some seconds I get a strange
message:
Title: Microsoft Outl...
Text: The operation failed.
OK button.
As you see there is something wrong even with the title of the above
error message.
This same issue also takes place if I try to send an e-mail from within
Word, Windows Explorer (e-mail this option), from within IE, etc and
Outlook 2003 is not started. It starts in the background and tries to
send the e-mail but when you try to open it to check if the e-mail that
you sent from Word, Explorer, IE, etc has actually gone, it again says
that "the operation failed". The only option is to kill the process. "

The web page or subsequent posts offer no "fix" for it, other than to
recommend some third party software called "Knockout" which supposedly
allows the user to control the closing of Outlook & Word.

Any ideas?
