Windows XP The network location cannot be reached

Hi Guys any helpm with this one.
Trying to connect a win xp pro machine to a domain. i get as far as logging on to server when i get this message the network location cannot ne reached,
i can log on to all machines using remote desk top inc server, i can ping all devices inc server and router, i can access the web so router is ok, server is ok as i am getting DCHP from server, DNS ok i can ping dns and get reponse,
any ideas as i am baffled on this one

Check to make sure your are a member of the same workgroup as the server.

Thanks for your reply but workgroups don't play a part as i am trying to join th elocal domain, ie xxx.local xxx= domain name
