The Mystery of Re-appearing Icons!

Hi all:
I have several (but not all) users (WinXP and Vista) on a SBS2003 system.
When they delete icons and shortcuts from their desktop they seem to
disappear fine. But at the next logon hey presto! - the deleted icons are
back! Why should this happen, and why does it only happen to SOME network
users and not all?
Can anyone please help - it is happening to me too!
Thanks

Sounds like a roaming profile issue.

As others have suggested, it is probably a roaming profile issue. If
that doesn't do it, or even if it does, make certain that these
machines get a good scan for malware. Over the years I have
encountered a couple of similar cases, and one where the icons on the
task bar could not be rearranged or deleted permanently. In each
case, the problem was traced to a bit of malware, though it sometimes
took a couple of days before the definition files caught up. Nothing
recent or specific, but something to check.

Thanks for the response - it's not an NVidia issue (not installed) or a
malware one. As you say it must be a roaming profile issue - but forgive me
for being thick (and a novice) - what IS the issue and how do I fix it????
Thanks

Nice idea - but I'm afraid that didn't work - still magically re-appearing
after re-boot!. Any more ideas please?
Thanks

Are there connectivity issues with the PC that are showing this behavior?

There could be a number of reasons why this happens, e.g. the user might
have "Read" but not "Write" access to parts of his home folder. If this was
my own show then I would do this:
1. Log on as the problem user at the problem PC.
2. Delete an icon.
3. Log on as Administrator on the server.
4. Locate that same icon on the user's home share.
5. Get the user to log off.
6. See if the icon still exists on the user's home share.
7. Rename the icon to something else.
8. Log on as the problem user at the problem PC.
9. See if the renamed icon appears.
If it does then it's a roaming profile issue. Since you appear to be the
current server administrator, you need to get up to speed with roaming
profiles and permissions. You should also discuss the issue with the person
who set it up in the first place.

No - none of the PCs have any connectivity issues - all connect and sync
perfectly.......and thet are 5 displaying this fault!

Try a different user on the PC? And that user on a different PC.
(problem with PC vs user)

Sorry - tried that already - I logged on to a different PC to the one I
normally use and the problem is still there. Could it be a problem with
individual profiles?

If it follows the user then the issue is the profile on the server, try
replacing the user profile.
