The local device name is already in use

While attemting to access a mapped drive over network, an erro pops up
"The local device name is already in use"
What does it mean and how this should be dealt with?
 
The drive letter you're trying to use is already taken,
perhaps as a drive letter for a background process.
 
Thanks, this makes sense. How do I know which drive lettere are taken a
background process?
Is it also possible that a background process hijack a letter previously
assigned to a drive and cuse thios error?
