The file xxx.pst is not a personal folders file.

I have a very current Personal Folders file which Outlook will no longer
open. I get the message "The file d:\......\filename.pst is not a personal
folders file. SCANPST.EXE wipes out all the subfolders, leaving only Deleted
Items, although the file is still the same size (25MB).

This contains all my current messages, so I'd REALLY appreciate any
assistance.

Something you've done appears to have corrupted the PST. If SCANPST can't
fix it, there may be a commercial too that can. See
