I have downloaded this application and not sure of how or where to install it.

How to install, from the Winzip web site:

"Just double-click the download file winzip90.exe to start the installation
procedure, then follow the instructions displayed on your screen."

Where to install: By default, software is installed to C:\Program Files and
that's a fine choice.

Are you even sure if you NEED it?

Windows XP DOES come with the native ability to work with .zip files.

The zip support integrated in the OS is adequate for most.

However, WinZip, et. al. add functionality and performance. When dealing
with zips above a certain size or number or files the integrated tool starts
to suck the machine under the floor.

Winrar may be an alternative to winzip. Many downloads are being rared and
if memory servers me, winzip will not decompress a rar file. Winrar will
decompress both zip and rar files.
