The difference among "save as" choices

C

Charlie Bress

I am using PowerPoint 97.
In the choices available in the "save as" drop down menu I find:

Presentation

PowerPoint Show

PowerPoint 95 & 97 Presentation

There is a problem sending presentations to others who may not have
PowerPoint or PowerPoint Viewer installed.
Which of the above choices (if any) will work for all recipients?
Which only work for those with at least Viewer installed?

Also what extensions are associated with each of the above.

Presentation = .ppt
PowerPoint Show = .pps
PowerPoint 95 & 97 Presentation = .ppt (don't use this one unless the
recipient has PowerPoint 95)

The only difference between the .ppt and the .pps is the way they open in
power (makes no difference in the viewer). the .ppt opens in the edit mode
and the .pps opens in the Slideshow mode

Bill, why didn't you just send the OP directly to the MS web site

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...27-43AB-4F24-90B7-A94784AF71A4&displaylang=en

to download the PPT viewer? Why direct them to go to a different, non-MS
web site?

While I have used the PPTools web site in the past and I recognize it as a
legitimate site, the links in that site could be construed as being bad by
some with the proliferation of fraudulent or porn sites on the web. If you
also wanted to include a link to the PPTools site then the OP could use that
site for reference.

I hope you take this criticism in the good spirit that it is intended. To
make and keep the MVP status, it takes a lot of hard, selfless work and I
applaud you and all other MVPs for helping out those in search of knowledge.

Either Presentation or Show will work for recipients who have PPT or the free
PPT viewer installed.

95&97 is only needed for those who have only PowerPoint 95 installed. It tends
to make horribly bloated files; generally you'd be better skipping this one
and having them download/install the free viewer.

Creating an HTML file, posting it to the web and emailing a link is another
option that requires nothing of the recipient but a browser and an internet
connection.
