The Browser Wars?

B

Bert Van Vliet

Good afternoon, folks,

I have a problem with our domain here, specifically with
NetBIOS browsing of the network.

Our main domain controller is a Windows 2000 server,
running DNS, DHCP, WINS, and Active Directory. AD works
fine, as far as I can tell - it's WINS and the network
browsing that's causing problems.

We've got 6 servers, including the PDC; all are configured
to maintain server lists, but only the main server is
configured to be the Domain Master browser. (I've checked
the registry to confirm). WINS *is* receiving workstation
registrations as the users log on.

The problem is that when anyone on a workstation tries to
browse the network to find a computer by name, they get
this error:

"The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available"

I've been over all the settings, and everything looks like
it should. Browsing should be working, but it won't. I
downloaded and tried the 'Browcon.exe' tool from the
Microsoft Website, and it gave me back an error saying
that the domain controller/master browser didn't exist.

I think this might be why we're having browser issues, but
I can't seem to find the way to resolve it. From the GUI
end, everything looks like it's running the way it should,
and you can map to anything in the domain by name using
the command prompt.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any and all help
gratefully appreciated. :)

Does the ipconfig/all show that all is pointing to your server-IP?
What OS on the clients?
