Text Select Problem

I have a user that's running Word 2003 that has a problem that I can't figure
out. When you left click with the mouse anywhere on the document it
highlights all text to the left of the cursor. And no matter what I can't
get this to stop without rebooting the computer. I also don't know what the
user does (accidentally) to get the highlighting to work this way. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks
 
Pressing F8 (extend selection) can have that effect. Pressing Esc clears it.
