Text not autofitting despite being told to in autoformat options

In a presentation created in PowerPoint 2003, now being edited in 2007, I
can't get the text to autofit even though that is the default option selected
in Options>Autoformat. Can anyone tell me how I can get this to work? I do
not get the little box to the lower left of the text box that would give me
the ability to manually tell it to autofit.

Thanks very much for this. Unfortunately, what I want the text to do is to
increase proportionally, not decrease. When I followed the steps you gave me,
I was able to make the text shrink when the text box became too small, but
not grow when the text box had lots of room. Any further suggestions would be
most appreciated.
I'm really wondering why 2007 doesn't recognize the autofit text to
placeholder settings of earlier versions.
I am also wondering why 2007 will not let me see what's in a textbox once I
place a graphic on top of it (to move in and out with custom animation). In
2003, all I did was click on the underlying text box and it came to the front
for reading and editing. Now, in 2007, I have to move the graphics out of the
way. Is there some way around this?

Thanks for any enlightenment!

Thanks, Echo S, but this doesn't help. I tried the Selection pane and told it
to show the text rectangle below the graphic but it didn't. I am really
wondering why Microsoft would change this (PPT 2003 and other earlier
versions allowed the underneath text rectangle to show through just by
clicking on it)? This is now very clunky as I have to move all the graphics
out of the way to edit what's underneath and then move them all back again.
Any other ideas, anyone?

Thanks for trying to help...I appreciate it.

I can't help with the grow thing, but maybe the Selection Pane (on the Home
tab at the far right under Selection) will help with the shapes and
textboxes.

But if you click the eye icon in the selection pane, you can temporarily
hide the stuff on top. Do your edits, then unhide the objects....

:

In 2007 you can override the defaults for individual placeholders

Right click > Format Shape > TextBox > Make sure "Shrink Text on
Overflow"
is checked.

I just had the same issue. Except I had created my presentation in 2003,
saved it on a memory stick and showed it on a laptop using 2007, made a few
changes and resaved it to the stick. It hasn't been the same since! Finally
gave up on autofit and started to go into each slide to change the font
manually. I saved & closed to see if it had worked on a few slides and saw
that it didn't stick! The only thing that finally worked was to go into the
Slide Master and change the font from there. I am slowly regaining my sanity.
