PowerPoint 2002 - How to manually Autofit Text

J

Jason Scoggins

I've got PowerPoint 2002. The two Autofit options under tools -->
Autocorrect --> Autoformat as you type are both selected.

Usually, when I enter more text than will fit in a place holder the smart
tag will come up and give me options to autofit text or not ... so far so
good.

However, there are times when this does not occur.

Is there a manual way to autofit the text as a workaround?

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello Jason,

These settings only affect text that has been entered into placeholders
from the slide autolayouts. They have no affect on text that is entered
into text boxes or shapes.

For individual placeholders where the autofit text as you type does not
appear to be taking place, it's possible that autofit has been turned off
for that placeholder. To verify this, click inside the placeholder as
though you were going to edit the text and see if a little button/icon
appears at the edge of the placeholder. If this button/icon appears, click
on it to see the options menu. If the option to "Stop fitting text to this
placeholder" is selected, change the setting so that "AutoFit text to
placeholder" is selected.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide additional options for fitting text to placeholders (or
even to any text box or autoshape), don't forget to send your feedback (in

Thank you John,

This answer clears it up precisely. I also went and tested various layouts
to get the behavior for PowerPoint 2002 down.

It seems odd that the feature is enabled for the autolayout slides, but not
those that we create. I may take your advise and make the suggestion.

Thank you for your help.
